What Baccarat Rouge 540 Eau de Parfum actually smells like
Baccarat Rouge 540 does not smell like anything that came before it, which is the entire reason it became a cultural object. Saffron and jasmine open it, but what people actually register is the amberwood-and-fir-resin accord that follows: airy, slightly metallic, faintly like caramelised sugar and cotton candy without ever being a gourmand. It has been described as smelling like a colour, which is unhelpful and also accurate.
It is transparent and enormous at the same time. Projection is huge, especially on fabric where it can last for days, but on skin it wears surprisingly close after the first few hours. Ten hours is normal. Two sprays is plenty and three is showing off.
It is also the single most cloned and most counterfeited fragrance in the world. A verified decant is both cheaper than a bottle and considerably safer than a suspiciously affordable one online, and 5 ml is enough to understand what everyone else is chasing.

Baccarat Rouge 540 Eau de Parfum FAQ
A sweet, airy amber with saffron and jasmine and a distinctive burnt-sugar or cotton-candy quality, set against a slightly resinous woody base. It is sweet without being a dessert and it smells synthetic in a deliberate, expensive way.
The EDP is the famous one — airier, sweeter, more projective. The Extrait is denser, with more amber and a slightly boozier feel, and it wears closer. The EDP is what most people mean by BR540.
It is genuinely unique, which is rare, and it performs enormously. It is also everywhere now and heavily cloned. A 5 ml decant answers the question for about the price of a lunch.
The amberwood materials at its core are extremely tenacious on fabric. Do not be surprised to still smell it on a coat a week later.
