What Parfums de Marly Layton actually smells like
Layton is the fragrance that turned Parfums de Marly from a curiosity into a phenomenon. It opens with a crisp apple and bergamot that is immediately appealing, moves through a violet-and-geranium heart with a peppery bite, and lands in a thick vanilla-cardamom-sandalwood base that is where its reputation lives. The word people keep using is 'addictive'.
Performance is top tier: ten hours plus, projection that carries across a room for the first several hours, and remarkable staying power on clothing. It is versatile too — cold weather suits it best but it holds up in spring, and it works for both work and evenings if applied with restraint.
It is also very widely counterfeited, and the fakes are convincing enough to fool people. Buying a decant from a shop that shows you the source bottle is the cheapest form of insurance in this category.

It sits in an unusually likeable space — fresh apple and lavender on top, warm vanilla and spice underneath — and it performs enormously well. It reads as expensive and it gets noticed, which is a rare combination at any price.
The standard Layton is the sweeter, more vanilla-forward crowd-pleaser. Exclusif is spicier, drier and more mature. Most people should start with the standard version.
Genuinely so. It is marketed to men and worn heavily by women, and it is one of the most shared bottles in the niche market.
Fakes are common and increasingly good. The reliable answer is provenance rather than bottle inspection — buy from somewhere that will tell you where the bottle came from and show you a photo of it, which we do for every batch.
