What Le Labo Santal 33 actually smells like
Santal 33 is less a fragrance than a piece of cultural shorthand. It smells dry, smoky and slightly milky — cedar and papyrus doing most of the work, with a violet-iris softness on top and a leathery ambrox note underneath. Notably, it does not smell much like sandalwood, which surprises people who order it expecting creaminess.
It is close-wearing and moderate, lasting six to eight hours with a sillage that stays personal. It is completely unisex and completely seasonless, and it has the unusual quality of smelling like a place rather than like a perfume.
It is also so widely worn in certain cities that some people actively avoid it. Whether it reads as chic or as a uniform on you is worth a 5 ml decant to find out, especially at Le Labo pricing.

Le Labo Santal 33 FAQ
Not really, despite the name. The dominant impression is dry cedar and papyrus with a leathery, slightly smoky ambrox note. People expecting creamy Mysore sandalwood are usually surprised.
It is distinctive, genuinely unisex, and it reads as understated and expensive rather than showy. It became a signature in creative and hospitality circles and has stayed there.
In some cities you will smell it regularly. It remains very good, which is a separate question from whether you want to smell like a well-known thing.
