What Tom Ford Black Orchid actually smells like
Black Orchid was Tom Ford's first fragrance and it remains his weirdest. It opens on truffle and blackcurrant — an odd, slightly savoury, almost damp accord — and moves into a dark floral heart with chocolate, patchouli and incense underneath. It smells expensive, gothic and vaguely unsettling, and it has been in continuous production for twenty years because a great many people love exactly that.
It is powerful. Ten hours plus, huge sillage, and it will linger on a scarf until you wash it. One spray is a reasonable starting dose. Cold weather and evenings only.
Nobody is neutral about Black Orchid, and it is close to the top of our list of fragrances that should never be purchased without a trial. A 2 ml decant is the entire point of a business like ours.

Tom Ford Black Orchid FAQ
The truffle note in the opening. It is dark and slightly earthy in a way that most fragrances avoid entirely, and it is the single most divisive thing about Black Orchid. It fades into the chocolate and patchouli heart after about twenty minutes.
It is marketed unisex and wears that way. Slightly more women wear it, but it is a legitimately shared bottle and men wear it well in winter.
One spray, possibly two. It is one of the strongest fragrances in mainstream distribution and over-applying it is very noticeable to everyone but you.
