Eros is not subtle and has never pretended to be. Mint and green apple open it with a synthetic brightness, and then a huge tonka-vanilla-ambroxan base arrives and stays for eight hours. It smells like a nightclub in the best possible way and it has been one of the best-selling masculines in the world for over a decade.

Projection is enormous for the price, which is most of the appeal. Two sprays is genuinely enough and four is a public nuisance. It suits cold weather, evenings and anyone under about thirty-five, and it is a poor choice for a quiet office.

At this price point a decant is less about avoiding a mistake and more about collection variety — a 10 ml of Eros in a drawer covers a whole category of night-out wear without a bottle taking up shelf space.
